Stone edging is the detail that makes a planting bed look finished. We install natural cobblestone borders with rounded, irregular stones staggered and stacked for a soft, organic line that follows the curve of the bed instead of fighting it.
Our most popular edge option is a natural hand-cut edge that cleanly redefines the bed from the grass. It gives an instant, crisp separation without any visible barrier, and it pairs beautifully with a fresh mulch topdress. Because grass slowly grows back into the bed line, we recommend refreshing this edge every one to two years — yearly, ideally, at the same time as your mulch refresh, for the cleanest look.

Our process
Layout
We mark the bed line, wall location or boulder placement on site so you can see the shape and spacing before anything is set.
Excavation and base
Trenches are cut and bases compacted so cobblestone, wall stone and boulders sit level and stay put through Michigan freeze-thaw cycles.
Installation
Stones are set with staggered, stacked placement for a natural look, and boulders are positioned and settled into the bed for stability. For natural hand-cut edges, we cut a clean, vertical line between turf and bed.
Refresh schedule
Natural hand-cut edges are best refreshed every one to two years as grass creeps back in. We recommend scheduling this yearly alongside your mulch topdress for the cleanest, lowest-effort look.
Cleanup
Surfaces are washed and blown clean and all excess material is removed from the property.
Natural stone that survives Michigan winters
Freeze-thaw movement is brutal on cheap plastic roll edging. It heaves out of the ground within a season or two and ends up wavy and exposed. Rounded cobblestone, set on a compacted base and staggered into the soil line, settles into place and holds its shape through the same conditions.
Stone areas need proper base prep and drainage, or clay soil pumps fines up through the stone and the whole area goes muddy. Doing the base right is what keeps decorative stone looking clean years later.
Accent boulders and low garden wall stones work well in Oakland County yards because they handle grade changes, drainage and winter heaving without the maintenance of wood or manufactured materials.
